That little orange engine symbol on your dashboard. It appears without warning, often on a Sunday, usually just before a long drive. And it sends most people into a mild panic.

February 1, 20266 minHere's the honest truth: in the majority of cases, a check engine light is not an emergency. But it also shouldn't be ignored. Let us explain what's actually going on under the bonnet.
Modern vehicles are controlled by an Engine Control Unit (ECU) — essentially the car's brain. It constantly monitors hundreds of sensors across your engine, exhaust, fuel system, and emissions. When any reading falls outside the expected range, the ECU logs a fault code and lights up the dashboard warning.
The symbol is generic, which is why it's confusing. One light covers everything from a loose fuel cap to a failing catalytic converter.
Easily the most common trigger. A loose fuel cap allows vapour to escape, which the system reads as an emissions fault. Tighten or replace the cap and the light often disappears on its own within a day or two.
The lambda sensor measures how much oxygen is in your exhaust gases. A failing sensor affects fuel economy and emissions — and it's one of the top three most common fault codes worldwide.
The catalytic converter cleans your exhaust gases. If it's failing — often because of an ignored lambda sensor fault — you'll see reduced performance and the light will stay on.
Drop your vehicle off before noon. We handle the rest. Drive home tonight with fresh oil, new filters, and zero stress.
This sensor measures the air entering the engine. A fault here causes rough running, poor fuel economy, and sometimes black smoke from the exhaust.
Misfires triggered by worn plugs or a failing coil will light up the engine warning quickly. You'll often notice rough idling or hesitation under acceleration alongside this.
The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve is a frequent fault point on diesel engines, especially ones used mainly for short city journeys.
Most check engine warnings are amber — steady light, drive carefully, get it checked soon. But there are situations that need immediate attention:
⚠️ Rule of thumb: Steady light = get it checked within the week. Flashing light = stop driving and call us.
We connect an OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) scanner to your vehicle's diagnostic port — a standard socket found in all cars made after 2001. The scanner reads the fault codes stored by the ECU.
These codes tell us which system triggered the fault. From there, we do further checks to confirm the root cause — because a code points to a system, not always to the exact broken part.
The whole process usually takes 30–60 minutes. We'll show you the codes, explain what they mean in plain language, and give you an honest quote for any work needed. No surprises.
In many cases, yes — but get it looked at within a few days. A steady check engine light with no other symptoms and normal driving behaviour is usually safe for short journeys.
However, in Spain, if your ITV is coming up, a lit check engine light is an automatic fail. So even if it's not affecting performance, you'll want it resolved before your inspection.
💡 Note: Clearing the code without fixing the underlying fault will just cause the light to return. We always fix first, clear second.
At Motorplus, a diagnostic scan is straightforward and transparently priced. We'll tell you upfront what it costs, what we found, and what fixing it will involve — with no obligation to proceed.
